The Sultanahmet

“This mosque became known in the west as the Blue Mosque because of the predominantly blue coloring of the paintwork and tiles inside. The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 by order of Sultan Ahmet I, after whom it was named. It is as if it was built to compete with its grand neighbor, the Byzantine Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya). Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, a student of the famous architect Sinan, designed the Blue Mosque as the only mosque in Turkey with six minarets. It is also the largest mosque in Turkey. The interior of the Blue Mosque features a massive dome supported by four grand columns, five meters (16ft) in diameter and are known as elephant feet, as well as characteristic Ottoman tile patterns and brightly-colored windows.”

Also as quoted from my handy dandy CDD booklet. Thanks Jen!
